A home from home
Landed safely in Gibraltar today. Thankfully bike survived the trip and was reassembled outside the airport within 30 mins.
Ever the skinflint, I thought I’d bypass a taxi fare to the hotel and walk instead. Had to strap the bike-box to the bike which was totally ridiculous. Being concerned about your appearance and people’s perception of you is the first casualty of any cycle tour.
After an eternity of pushing along bike and box, arrived at the hotel.
Had a little nap at the hotel (was up at 3.30 this morning) and then headed out on Scotty to shake a few cobwebs off. Climbed up the Rock which at over 400m was actually quite tough. Took several wrong turns on the way, so probably climbed quite a bit more than necessary.
In to town in the evening to find some food and a pint. Had the mixed grill, as I’ve been reliably informed in the past that you can ‘never go wrong’ with a mixed grill. I beg to differ. When in Rome they say; so a mixed grill and a pint of Stella was an apt choice in this rather bizzare British enclave. I will expand the culinary horizons when in Spain.
Sitting in a nice quay side bar that has free wifi access, which means that it’s actually cheaper to watch the sunset with a few ales than head to the internet cafe.
Will head to bed early tonight as I’m totally wrecked and plan to test the legs tomorrow with some proper mileage.
Interesting observation of Gibraltar; the sun and fresh air seem to have done marvels for the Queen’s portrait. On both the £5 & £10 notes she is actually smiling, and looks like she’s been on 10 years younger.
